Charity Of The Month: Rainbows Hospice
Despite the advances in medical technologies over the years, some children still don’t live long enough – and that is extremely unfortunate. However, a nearly 20-year-old hospice in Loughborough makes the life that they do get to live that little bit more memorable.
Rainbows Hospice was established in 1994 by Harry and Gail Moore, to support children and young people with long-term and terminal illnesses. Based in Loughborough, the hospice offers a place for patients to play, laugh and love the life that they do have, whilst also providing care and support to their families.
Rainbows’ experienced in house team help to relieve the symptoms of their patients’ illnesses, aiming to improve their quality of life at a time when they are most vulnerable. Caring for their young patients till the very end, the hospice continues to support their families through the bereavement process and into the future.
The charity has been such a success in the East Midlands that a multitude of celebrity patrons such as cricketer Matthew Hoggard, sports commentator and former footballer Gary Lineker and TV personality Angela Rippon OBE have all signed up to support and promote the charity’s incredible work.
At present, the hospice houses 14 bedrooms, a selection of family rooms, landscaped gardens and other state-of-the-art facilities such as a hydrotherapy pool, multi-sensory room, and soft-play room. Beyond in-house features, the charity organises outreach activities including parent groups, sibling activities and day trips to provide a much-needed respite in the treatment process. Also available are day-care facilities, along with specialist doctor/nurse appointments where time is spent focussing specifically on your child’s needs.
Despite being part funded by the Department for Health and legacy finances, the hospice relies mainly on donations from charitable persons and businesses in order to continue with its incomparable services in aiding poorly children and young people. However, it also hosts its own fundraising efforts such as the Handbag Amnesty and the Rainbows Lottery, together with benefitting from donations from other local events, such as the Moonlight Walk.
